Teachers Call For Resignation Of WAEC Boss, Dissolution Of Board

The Ghana National Association of Graduate Teachers, on Thursday,
called on the Head of the West African Examination Council in Ghana
to resign to allow authority to investigate without interference. The
NAGRAT is also calling for the dissolution of the Board of Directors for
WAEC.

Addressing a press conference in Accra, the National Vice President of
the Association, Mr. Angel Kabonu, explained that it was imperative
that Rev. Samuel Ollenu steps aside to ensure that investigations were
done independently.

“The results our students churn out is a reflection of our competence
or otherwise,” he said, emphasising on the fact that teachers put in
their best to prepare students for exams, therefore excellent
performance should not be misconstrued to be with assistance of
leaked papers.

Mr. Kabonu said, “when papers leak and the questions are on the
internet, whatsApp and pupils could email them, then we will have to
ask ourselves the question, ‘where is it coming from?’, definitely it is
coming from WAEC.”

He then argued that students should not suffer for the errors and
incompetence of the examination body, calling for the establishment of
an alternative body to bring about competition to make WAEC sit up.

Why we will not adopt CBT for Exam now – WAEC

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on Tuesday said that it
would not adopt the Computer Based Test (CBT) mode fully for now,
considering the variables involved in conducting its examinations.

WAEC’s Head of National Office (HNO), Dr Charles Eguridu, told the
some journalists in Lagos that the CBT mode being demanded by
some people was not feasible for now.

Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) had, during its 2015
Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) recently, migrated
fully to the CBT mode.

JAMB said that it migrated to the CBT mode to eradicate
impersonation and other forms of examination malpractice.

According to Eguridu, those making the call are ignorant of the
socioeconomic variables that are necessary for the adoption of the
CBT for WAEC examinations.

He said: “WAEC examinations involve the use of multiple choice
questions, essay and practical, in which case we test various domains
of learning.

“And with this, it is not going to be valid to test certain domains of
learning with CBT.

“Or can you use CBT in measuring proficiency in certain trade subjects
such as carpentry and others? ’’

The official said that the inadequacy of internet connectivity and
constant electricity in the country, especially in rural areas, would make
such a venture almost impossible.

Eguridu said that the huge capital outlay that would be required to
provide computers and its accessories for every candidate nationwide
makes the cost of the venture prohibitive.

“All what I am trying to explain here is that it will not be possible for
us to adopt the CBT mode for our examinations at least for now.
“Probably what we will do as an organisation is to adopt the CBT for
certain aspects of our examination and not all the areas.

“ We are already trying to work out something based on that,” he said.

WAEC Cancels 2014 Withheld Results Due To Malpractice

The National Examinations (NEC) Committee of WAEC on Thursday in a communiqué released after the 59th meeting of the committee disclosed that results of candidates who involved in examination malpractices at the 2014 examinations has been cancelled.

It was learnt that the committee reviewed a report on irregularity, special and clemency cases arising from the conduct of the May/June 2014 West African Senior School Certificate (WASSCE) at the meeting.

Excerpts of the Communiqué which was signed by an officer at the Public Affairs Department of WAEC, Mr Damianus Ojijeogu read thus;

“In the course of considering the various reported cases of malpractice, the committee, after diligent deliberations, approved appropriate sanctions in all established cases of malpractice.

“This action is as prescribed by the rules and regulations governing the conduct of the council’s examinations. “It approved that the entire results of such candidates involved in proven cases be cancelled. “The communiqué also recommended that the subjects’ results of those involved in proven cases of malpractice be similarly cancelled.

“In addition, some candidates will also suffer other sanctions such as barring them from sitting for the council’s examinations for a certain number of years,” it said. The statement said that the decisions of the committee would be implemented without delay, while the affected candidates would be duly informed by the council. It, however, said that the results of candidates exonerated by the committee would be released.

“The committee has directed all the ad-hoc examination functionaries, who were indicted of involvement or condoning malpractice during the conduct of the examination, be reported to appropriate state Ministries of Education.

“The ad-hoc examination functionaries, who participated during the November/December 2014 WASSCE, would also be reported to relevant bodies for disciplinary action. “This will be in addition to the sanctions imposed on them by the council.

“The committee, as in previous meetings, strongly expressed concern at the alarming incidence of malpractice in examinations and urged stakeholders to join hands in curbing the menace,” it said
