Necessary Requirements For A Successful Admission Screening

Many candidates have been asking questions on the kind of preparations they need ahead of their institutions' admission screening exercise.

Like you already know, the screening as stipulated by JAMB will involve the verification of your documents and physical examination of the candidates.

As we have always done, we would like to use this medium to bring you up to speed concerning what is expected of you in preparation towards the screening exercise of your institution.

For the sake of clarity and emphasis, I would like to present them as bullet points.

1. Get Your O-level Results Ready: Candidates are expected to present copies of their O-level Certificates or Statement of Results obtained in not more than two sittings.

Another thing you should know is that if it is up to four years you sat for your O-level examination, your institution will likely require you to present the Original Certificate of the O-level examination instead of statement of results because it is expected that your Original Certificate should be ready after four years.

Therefore, if you sat for your O-level examination four years ago and beyond, it is advisable to go get your O-level Certificate(s) ready before the screening exercise of your institution. For those, whose O-level certificates are not yet available, they can present their statement of result. For such candidates, they may need to provide result checking scratch card (NECO, WAEC, NABTEB, as applicable).

For candidates still waiting for the release of their results, you can go for the screening with your O-level registration slip.

Concerning the combination of results, candidates can combine results even if it is from different examination bodies e.g WAEC and NECO. However, your institution may not allow you to combine NABTEB results with WAEC or NECO results.

2. Determine If You Have the Right Subjects For Your Course of Study: To study your course of study in any institution, you are required to have a minimum of 5 credit passes in the relevant O-level subjects. Many candidates are not sure if their O-level subjects tally with the course they intend to study. Each course of study has specific subjects a candidates must credit before he/she qualifies for admission in that particular course. To determine if you possess the relevant subjects for your course of study, follow the steps below;

If you are currently using an android phone or device,
i. On the page that opens, click on “install” (you can continue reading the instructions below file the installation is in progress. This may take a few seconds)

ii. After the installation, open the app and click on the “JAMB Brochure” button

iii. Click on your Faculty (It is expected that you should know the Faculty your course falls under), this will open a list of courses available in that faculty. If your course is not on the list, go back and click on a related faculty to check for your course of study.

iv. Click on your course of choice and wait for the page to load. Once it loads, scroll down to the section that indicates “O-level Requirements” and read through to determine the subject you must obtain credit passes to qualify for admission in your course of study.

For non-android phones/Computer Systems, Access the online JAMB brochure and follow steps iii – iv as described above.

3. Other documents you need To present: In addition to your O-level results, you are to present other documents which may include;

i. Birth Certificate or Affidavit of Age Declaration
ii. JAMB Original Result Slip.
iii. Screening Registration Slip (for those that registered online)
iv. Local Government of Origin (this can be obtained at your LGA Secretariat)

4. Physical examination: JAMB disclosed that candidates will equally be examined based on appearance to know if they are cultists or "future cultists". That sounds funny. I wonder how you can tell who is a cultist or who would likely be one just by looking at the person's face unless you are a fortune teller or a prophet.

Be that as it may, candidates should ensure they dress formal to the screening exercise. Do not put on any thing that will make you look irresponsible. If you have tattoos or piercings on your body, make sure they are removed or well covered before appearing for the screening.

If you have additional questions concerning this, you can use the comment box to ask your questions.

NANS Rejects JAMB New Admission Policy (Eligibility Regulation) Calls for Immediate Reversal

The National Association Of Nigerian Students south west zone has called for immediate reversal of the new admission policy (Eligibility Regulation).

According to a statement issued by the General Secretary and Public Relations Officer Zone D, Comr. Obanobi Bidemi and Comr. Olatinwo Jeremiah, the association describes this new policy as fraudulent.

The statement reads," Over 40 million Nigerian students at home and in diaspora want the JAMB registrar to define the word “CHOICE of INSTITUTION”. Why would I be posted to a school I never applied for? Why would I be posted to a school above my parents’/sponsors’ means.

“We saw this trend coming from last year when the myopic board reduced the options of institution of choice from six to three claiming it is to save students from the fraudulent activities of tertiary institutions in the process of admitting students.

“We call on the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to begin a probe into the accounts of the admission board, its registrar and top echeleon as it has been paid by proprietors of private tertiary institutions hence the bastardization of the admission exercise – a great semblance to the scandal that rocked the world football governing body, FIFA,” it said.

The statement also warns that the over 5 million students across the 6 states of the South West, including affected students, would be mobilised to the JAMB office if the policy was not reversed immediately.

Learn How To Write A Good CV in Nigeria

A curriculum vitae – popularly called a CV – is literally your work history, a summary of your educational and work experience, for the information of possible future employers. It’s a bit different from a résumé, in that a résumé is typically used by people in all professions except academia and medicine.
Your CV is practically who you are, what you carry and portray. Without meeting you, a prospective employer, or anyone who comes in contact with it, should have some good idea of who you are.
There are so many ways, techniques and ideas on how to write a standard CV. It’s the content, practical skills, and work experience that employers are particularly interested in, plus evidence of what you have created, like listings of exhibitions. Work experience takes priority over education. For example, for a multimedia CV, you should include your technical skills (your proficiency with programs like Flash, Maya, and Photoshop). For advertising jobs, evidence of an interest in music, art, photography or film may help
Only when the wording is excellent consider into something that is a bit different: get the content right before focusing on the design. It is the content and presentation that will make the impact.
Below is what I consider to be a concise and easy guide on how to write a standard CV.
Presentation (Layout and Style)
When writing a CV you’re communicating with someone you’ve probably never met, so it’s important to make that first impression count. An effective CV is the start of every successful job campaign, so it is very vital to spend time and effort on producing one that will get you that all important interview and give you the chance to market yourself in person. There are several standard CV formats, but most employers will prefer the chronological CV. Remember you never get a second chance to make a first impression.
Content (Personal Details)
Start with your name, address, telephone numbers, preferred e-mail address, date of birth and nationality.
Profile (Introduction)
Keep it short and to the point. This should be a few sentences or a short paragraph describing your key skills and experience. Tailor it to the position you are applying for. Detail your professional status and career development along with your immediate ambitions.
Professional and Academic QualificationsList your most recent achievements first. Unless you are a recent graduate or school leaver, your professional experience and qualifications will be most relevant.
Employment HistoryList all previous employment in reverse chronological order. Start with details of your current employment. Include name and location of employer, your job title and dates of employment. Use bullet points to outline the main responsibilities, and accomplishments. Wherever possible quantify and qualify with specific details that illustrate your skill base. Ensure that you account for any gaps in your employment history.
Hobbies/InterestsUnless they specifically relate to skill requirements of the position you’re applying for, it is worth considering omitting the rather dated tradition of listing your personal interests. They take up valuable room on your CV that could be used to include more relevant information.
PortfoliosSome applications may be supported by a portfolio of your work. State on your CV that a portfolio is available on request. If you have applied online or have an online portfolio make sure that you include the URL to your site.
ReferencesIt is not necessary to include details of referees at this stage. However, you may want to state that references are available on request.
Tips on Writing a CV
  • Do not hand-write a CV.
  • Use good quality white A4 paper to print your CV (if possible use a laser printer).
  • Use a clear typeface.
  • Ensure the layout is evenly spaced and easy to read, using subheadings to draw the reader’s eye to important information.
  • Remember to keep all information on your CV concise and clear.
  • Be scrupulously careful when you proofread, a misspelling or grammatical error gets noticed before the point you are trying to make does. Get someone else to check it for you.
  • Focus on your skills and experience. Highlight your career achievements.
  • Always keep your CV up to date.
Naturally a CV needs to be revised periodically during your career. If required, your Recruitment Consultant can assess your CV and offer advice on any areas that could be refined to develop your chance of success in getting the position you want.

See What A Final Year Student Sent To Myschool As A Job Application Letter

We received an email this morning from someone who according to the information he provided, claimed to be a final year student of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri Imo state.

The mail was supposed to be an application letter for a job in Myschool Limited.

Below is the exact copy of the letter. However, the phone number, email and name of the sender have been excluded to protect his identity.

"Subject:
Requestion for a postion

Message:

a shopping site and odas.i have a 2 yrs working experience with JOAS AFRICA
COMPANY,UBA BANK,etc. Pls hoping to hear a reply ur office. Thanks.
"

It is not as if we all must be gurus in the use of English language. Some mistakes are understandable.

However, the poor punctuations, spellings and gross grammatical errors that characterized the content of the mail above especially when juxtaposed with the fact that this is coming from a final year student; someone who will soon be a certified graduate is really worrisome and makes you wonder who is to be blamed - the student or his supposed teachers/lecturers or the country?

Mind you, the reason we published this is not to condemn the sender or present him in a bad light. But to let others learn from it. A letter like this will out rightly get you disqualified for any job. Unless otherwise, the use of English language is not a criterion.

You can leave your thoughts using the comment box below.

344 Staff Of Rivers State Poly, Bori Has Been Sacked By Wike Led Administration

About 344 newly recruited staff including lecturers of Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori has been sacked by the new government led by Governor Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike,.

It was learnt that the sacked workers were recruited by the immediate past administration led by Rotimi Amaechi.

According to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the institution, Innocent Ogbonnaya Nwanwo , this was contained in a directive sent to the Polytechnic by the State Ministry of Education. The directive also stated that the Rector of the polytechnic, Sir Obianko Worlu Elechi would proceed on compulsory leave.

He said, “The recent employment exercise we had at the Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori has been cancelled. The reason is that the government needed to review the process of their employment. The process that brought in the newly employed people; don’t forget, they have not started work, has been called off; it has been terminated by the state government.

“Right now, they don’t have a job here in the Rivers State Polytechnic. Technically speaking, that is the truth. The Rector is on leave; he was asked to proceed on leave.”

However one of the sacked lecturers who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said their recruitment followed due process and dates back to September 2014.

He called on Governor Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike, the State House of Assembly, and the authority of the Polytechnic to intervene on the issue.

Polytechnic Education Should Be Reviewed By FG – ASUP

The Academic Staff Union Of Polytechnics (ASUP) has called on the Federal Government to review the current state of Nigerian polytechnics.
Speaking at the 81st National Executive Council meeting of ASUP in Offa, Kwara State, the National President, Prof. Chibuzo Asomugha, said that the review is necessary in order for Nigerian polytechnics to meet global standards.
He stated that a mechanism should be put in place to allow all stakeholders evolve a model for polytechnic education that can fit into contemporary times.
Asomugha said jumping into the fray will not help Nigeria, as that is what has been happening in the country.
According to him, there had been disconcerted efforts at policy-making concerning technical education in Nigeria. He added that government need to draw up a refurbished template.
The union leader said that polytechnic education in the country are facing many challenges.
Asomugha said, “There is no understanding of what we really want polytechnic education to be. We have deviated from the original vision and there is no focus. There is hardly any technical intent in the delivery of polytechnic education and we must return to the basis.
“This dovetails into what happens in the wider economy, in the industries and private sector. There is no contact between the industries and the schools. We are just producing polytechnic graduates without being able to know where they will fit in”, he added.
